Educational Activities for Families 

Head Start Education Activities That Teachers Recommended for Families to Complete at Home

  • Sorting, matching and counting objects at home such as socks, clothes and can food items
  • Read a story with your child and have them retell the story. Create a new story and write it down, then draw pictures to go with the story and read it together.
  • Family Dance activities-turn on some music and dance around your home.
  • Have your child draw a picture then write what they described.
  • Prewriting activities-have your child practice writing their name. If they are unable to write the whole name, have them practice just a few letters of their name.
  • Take a listening walk around your home and when you return to your home, write down what you heard.
  • Make balls out of socks and play a game

Early Head Start Education Activities That Teachers Recommended for Families to Complete at Home

Education activities parents can work on with children while at home.

  • Listening activity (Parents will create a quiet environment for 1-2 minutes. Children will listen for sounds. Parents will then ask children what sounds they heard and chart them).
  • What is That Sound?
  • “Musical Matching”
  • Sing a tune or make a sound and ask children to repeat it
  • “My Rock and Roll Band”
  • Children will use items around the home as music instruments for their rock and roll band
  • “Happy or Sad”
  • Play different types of music and ask children if the music is happy or sad music
  • Family Dance activities-turn on some music and dance around your home.
